Women in Rhythm: Making the connection to life through natural rhythms

Natural rhythms exist in life to guide us in every aspect of our existence. Our breath and heartbeat are constant reminders of lifes pulsing rhythm that moves within and around us. External rhythms such as the changing moon, day to night cycles, changes in temperature, changes in seasons, the oceans tides and our internal rhythm guide us daily.

Further to these rhythms there are also individual cycles in our own lives. Women are more affected by these cycles that guide our moods and sleep. When we are in sync, we have more energy, everything flow, we are more connected and life is good!

According to Slow Movement (a family of 12 interested in bringing about change SLOWLY, working together to make a difference - to the community, the planet and to the health of all beings that inhabit the earth) : Many people live their lives cut off from the natural rhythms and cycles of nature and of their own bodies.Traditionally all cultures have lived in harmony with the natural rhythms and cycles and have included celebrations, festivals and outdoor events to reinforce their occurrence. Most of these are now lost to our current consumeristic, success oriented lives.Read more.

We can bring these traditions back by marking them with some activity. For example a Womens Retreat or attending a drumming circle.

Monica Yearwood, a Ayurveda Practicioner states that As women, we have additional senses of rhythm that connect us to the cycles of the moon. Each month, a womans body has the ability to cleanse and rejuvenate itself through her menses. It used to be in traditional cultures, that women would menstruate together during the dark night of the new moon. During this time they would gather to support one another in a journey of deep introspection.Read more.Women's spirituality circles have taken to drumming in a big way. Historically stately goddesses are shown playing drums, wild maidens tossing their heads as they pound, and priestesses sanctifying space with the rhythms they beat. The rise of Christianity, silenced both women and drumming in worship but now there is a reappearance of drumming in the modern age and its importance as a medium for transformation. In today's society women are still actively discouraged from taking up the drums, a paradigm of female experience. Many wise and passionate women claim to be drawn to the ecstatic pulse of the drum.

Ayurveda teaches that the full moon period is when a woman is at her strongest.Full moon time is the time that intentions that may have been lingering in the subconscious now come to fruition. If there is anything negative, now is the time for release. If there are conscious intentions now is the time for reaffirmation, to speak them out loud to commit them as a change.

The full moon time will occur on Feb 11th and 12th 2017, the dates of InRhythms next Womens Retreat which will be held at Rainbows Reach Retreat in Wyee.
